Virginia Big Day fundraiser on May 4 to benefit VSO’s 2nd Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas Fund

Xavier Gitre, a young birder from Blacksburg, Virginia, is coordinating a fundraiser for the VSO’s Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas II project. It will be a birding big day on May 4, wherein teams in different categories compete for the most species in the state or their region. The fundraising aspect refers to pledging—entities may pledge a certain sum for each species (or just a flat pledge), all of which will go directly to the atlas project. For more information, visit

New birding competition this spring—The Virginia Birding Classic!

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources invites you to participate in the kickoff of our inaugural statewide birding competition—The Virginia Birding Classic! The Classic will run from April 15th, 2024, through May 15th, 2024, during which time teams of birders are asked to search the public lands of Virginia for as many species as they can find in 24 hours.

All registration proceeds will benefit the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program, which connects youth to the outdoors. Registration opens on March 1, 2024, and closes April 1, 2024. Learn more by visiting
